About the Role:

GA Circular has been commissioned to research plastic and packaging flows in Cambodia to provide key insights, pioneering metrics and strategic recommendations to our client and to the packaging and consumer goods industry in Cambodia to move towards a Circular Economy. This research will equip stakeholders with science based evidence, tools and frameworks to create large scale solutions.

The objective of this role is to conduct surveys for data collection and stakeholder meetings in Cambodia in order to determine the collection, recovery and recycling of packaging rates in Cambodia.

The objective of the role is to conduct high quality surveys for research into the current status quo of waste in Phnom Penh. This includes

○ Conducting surveys across a pre-agreed number of households, waste collectors, recycling pickers, bulk waste generators, and junk shops (Approximately 50-75 in total). These surveys will be split evenly across different pre-agreed districts, income levels etc.

○ Surveys must be completed per schedule and timelines agreed.

○ Ensuring that the surveys are high quality without errors in the data

○ All data collected must be standardised to consistent units

○ Translating any Khmer notes taken during the surveys to English.

○ Being available for contact throughout the project duration for any clarifications or updates.

On average, the Contract Surveyor is expected to conduct 50 – 75 surveys over a 4 – 8 week period per person.

Requirements:

○ Good communication and interpersonal skills – to approach various stakeholders.

○ Good quantitative data gathering skills to ensure the quality of the data collected through the surveys.

○ Capable and comfortable travelling in Phnom Penh for surveys.

○ At least an intermediate knowledge of English – to communicate with the GA team in Singapore. Survey questions and responses will be in English, but the Contract Surveyor can ask the question in Khmer.

○ A basic background in sustainability and environment. Note that past experience in waste management is not required – we’ll train the selected candidate on waste management knowledge required for the role.

Key Responsibilities & Expectations:

Review 5 key reports on waste management and recycling in Cambodia and share findings with GA. The list of findings will be shared.

Manage and drive collection of data via surveys which includes:

○ Providing feedback on research/survey methodologies based on local knowledge

○ Testing surveys prior to executing all surveys. This includes trailing surveys and making changes to suit the local culture and needs.

○ Provide survey execution plans and recommendations based on local knowledge

○ Execute 250 high quality surveys to different stakeholder groups (including households, establishments, waste collectors, recycling pickers, junk shops and any other key stakeholders based on local knowledge.

○ Manage the local team of surveyors and make changes to survey execution plans based on feedback from Project Director/ Manager.

Stakeholder analysis and meetings in order to obtain up to date data and insights.

○ Set up > 10 stakeholder meetings with key stakeholders which includes recyclers, plastic/recycling industry bodies, government bodies (municipal authorities, ministry of environment, city waste authorities). This list will be provided by GA.

○ Attend and support GA with leading stakeholder meetings. GA will be in attendance in Cambodia for these meetings.

○ Create a stakeholder map and details. GA will provide more information upon role confirmation.

Regular (daily and weekly) communication with GA Project Director/ Manager via task management software (Asana), communication channels (Hangouts, Whatsapp) and alignment calls.

Requirements:

○ Bachelor’s degree in Physical Sciences (e.g. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), Environment, Engineering, Statistics, Business, Accounting or Finance

○ Good communication and interpersonal skills – to approach various stakeholders.

○ Capable and comfortable traveling throughout Phnom Penh to conduct surveys and meet with stakeholders.

○ Evidenced passion for the sustainability/environment/social enterprise space

○ Problem-solving, analytical skills, evidenced research capabilities (e.g. past research or data analysis reports which shows capabilities in these areas) and experience in primary and secondary data collection

○ Relationship management skills both with on-ground stakeholders, NGOs, Local government bodies as well as high ranking officials and business people

○ Self motivated and highly organized individual able to work in a dynamic and deliverables-oriented work environment

○ Strong capacity for primary and secondary data collection and research

○ Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)

○ Strong English skills – verbal and written. This is necessary for the translation of Khmer into English.

About this Role

We are looking for an experienced Research Project Manager with strong analytical, strategic thinking and relationship skills. Your background must include 5 years of experience and knowledge of waste management and/or recycling.  Ideally, your background includes working in management or environmental consulting or in a research, strategy or data analytics role in business, government agencies or NGOs.

This role involves working on packaging and food waste projects for prominent clients from leading chemicals, packaging, consumer goods and retail industries as well as city and national government agencies across Southeast Asia and India. The focus of the role will be to: create pioneering science-based research; provide key insights, strategic recommendations and measurable outcomes; and implement groundbreaking strategies to significantly drive the circular economy in Asia.

While primarily based in Malaysia, the role involves local travel within the Asia region with an opportunity to meet and build relationships with a wide range of local stakeholders from industry, government and NGOs.

Requirements:

– Based in Malaysia and with a minimum of 2+ years working in Asia

GA Circular has been commissioned to research plastic and packaging flows in Malaysia (focused on Greater KL/Klang Valley) to provide key insights, pioneering metrics and strategic recommendations to our client and to the packaging and consumer goods industry in Malaysia to move towards a world without waste. This research will equip stakeholders with science-based evidence, tools and frameworks to create large scale solutions.  

About The Role

Key responsibilities for this role are researching different stakeholders in the area of Waste Management and the Circular Economy in Malaysia.

This includes the below activities:

– Conducting surveys:

Background on the Role

In order to succeed in the role, you will need to have proven track record of managing project operations across a research or consultancy businesses, leading teams with diverse backgrounds and skillsets, combined with a proven entrepreneurial expreience in an emerging market in Southeast Asia to drive forward our business and impact in the region.

The candidate is expected to develop a strong domain knowledge of waste management and recycling industries for various packaging types specifically in a Southeast Asia context as well as wider Asia Pacific context. Prior experience in the waste management and the recycling industry is not mandatory, however a resolve to tackle the issue is a must and a quick learning curve to develop domain expertise is expected.

The Role comprises to 2 main Aspects:

1. Lead and execute project operations (approximately 70% of time)

Directly drive the delivery of key strategic projects on packaging recycling and food waste recycling in the Southeast Asian region – specifically in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar as well as in Singapore

Responsible for developing and continuously improving on templates and processes to deliver GA Circular projects and products with the objective of increased efficiencies (i.e. project profitability) and effective (i.e. higher client satisfaction scores)

Understand the goals of our clients and GA Circular and align our people to these objectives, setting clear priorities and direction

Ensure projects are being delivered within pre-agreed timelines and budgets

Lead project teams covering all operational aspects including day-to-day problem solving, team management, client management, and bring in deep domain knowledge, expertise, and proprietary tools to every client situation.

Lead delivery to clients including oversight and completion of strategic decks, presentations and reports (internal to clients & externally published)

Mentor and advise team members of GA Circular to strengthen their research and consulting abilities.

Influence clients, teams, and individuals positively. Leading by example and establishing confident relationships with senior project stakeholders.

2. Business development to grow impact in the region (approximately 30% of time)

Develop a deep understanding GA Circular’s various product offerings and past and ongoing work in circular economy
Manage and develop strategic client relationships with existing and new clients

Drive regional revenue and growth in Southeast Asia (especially in emerging Southeast Asian countries) measured by number of leads generated, proposal pipeline, new business closed, repeat business closed and existing client engagement against a baseline on these points

Drive the creation of new products that builds GA Circular’s offerings and thought leadership in the space of circular economy

Represent GA Circular at external conferences, events and speaking engagements

Job requirements:

10+ years of overall experience with at least 1 year of experience at Director or Associate Director level managing operations for research and / or consultancy firm where clients are multinational companies and / or government agencies

5+ years of experience of business development for research, consultancy firm where clients are multinational companies and / or government agencies

2+ years of entrepreneurial expreience of founding and running operations of your own company in an emerging Southeast Asian country (e.g. Vietnam, Indonesia or Philippines). The company need not be in the research or consultancy industries.

Proven ability of atleast 3+ years of expreience in managing and leading teams of up to 10 people

Excellent spoken and written fluency in English language

Excellent communications and interpersonal skills

Ability to travel for upto 2 weeks a month in the Southeast Asia region as and when required

Preferred:

Spoken fluency in Bahasa Indonesia or Vietnamese as some of the long-term projects for GA Circular in the area of packaging waste are in Indonesia and Vietnam. GA Circular is working on creating a packaging recovery and collection program in Indonesia. The goal of the program will be to drive collection and recovery of post-consumer packaging to significantly increase recycling rates of common packaging materials in Indonesia.

We are looking for an experienced Program Director with excellent problem solving, analytical, strategic thinking and relationship skills to lead and manage the program as well as subsequent programs in Indonesia focused on solving the packaging waste challenge. Your background must include experience in managing and leading projects for private sector or public sector clients, engaging with senior-level stakeholders and a willingness to get your hands dirty an eye for business sense. You need to be a great communicator, at ease with working with and leading both waste collectors/recyclers, and C-level executives. Prior experience in the waste management and recycling industry is not mandatory, and training will be provided by GA for subject matter knowledge. Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and English is critical to this role.

The primary focus of the role over the course of first 12 months will be split between two key areas: value chain based and stakeholder based. Value chain based tasks will involve speaking with junk shops, recyclers, and aggregators, amongst other, negotiation with and onboarding them to partner with the program and managing relationships through the partnership. Stakeholder based tasks will include managing the key stakeholders of the program – including packaging and consumer goods companies, government stakeholders, NGOs etc. There will also be a need to manage local research survey teams and research partners.

The role provides an opportunity to meet and build relationships with a wide range of local stakeholders from industry, government and NGOs. Working with GA provides you the opportunity to work in a small, mindfully growing, Singapore-headquartered company dedicated to finding business-driven solutions to tackle waste challenges in Asia.
