About this Role

We are looking for an experienced Research Project Manager with strong analytical, strategic thinking and relationship skills. Your background must include 5 years of experience and knowledge of waste management and/or recycling.  Ideally, your background includes working in management or environmental consulting or in a research, strategy or data analytics role in business, government agencies or NGOs.

This role involves working on packaging and food waste projects for prominent clients from leading chemicals, packaging, consumer goods and retail industries as well as city and national government agencies across Southeast Asia and India. The focus of the role will be to: create pioneering science-based research; provide key insights, strategic recommendations and measurable outcomes; and implement groundbreaking strategies to significantly drive the circular economy in Asia.

While primarily based in Malaysia, the role involves local travel within the Asia region with an opportunity to meet and build relationships with a wide range of local stakeholders from industry, government and NGOs.

Requirements:

– Based in Malaysia and with a minimum of 2+ years working in Asia

– Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required (e.g. Engineering, Economics, Environment, Business, Accounting, Finance or Physical Sciences, or Data Analytics).

– Advanced problem-solving, analytical skills, evidenced research capabilities (e.g. past research or data analysis reports which shows capabilities in these areas) and experience in primary and secondary data collection

– Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with various clients and stakeholders

– The right attitude and skills to work with and manage relationships with people of all backgrounds, from C-Level and senior management of multinationals to recycling workers

– Capable and comfortable travelling throughout Asia to conduct research and meet with stakeholders

– Evidenced passion and deep-seated aspiration to tackle environmental challenges.

– A self-motivated and highly organized individual able to work in a dynamic and deliverables-oriented work environment

– Experience in leading teams to successfully deliver on projects within timelines

– Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) & Google (Docs, Sheets & Slides)

– Comfortable working independently based in Malaysia with the main team is based in Singapore.

– Strong English skills – verbal and written

Preferred:

– Experience including management or environmental consulting or in a research, strategy or data analytics role in business, government agencies or NGOs is preferred.

– Waste management / Sustainability knowledge. Note that past experience in waste management and circular economy is not required but is preferred. If you do not have waste management experience and/or circular economy understanding we will require you to take some online courses and study reports before starting on the role.

About this Project

Approximately 8 million tons of plastic leak into the ocean every year, with 80% of this from Asia.   Malaysia is considered one of the top 8 countries for ocean plastic pollution, with approximately 0.94 million tonnes of plastic mismanaged and leaking into the environment every year.

GA Circular has been commissioned to research plastic and packaging flows in Malaysia (focused on Greater KL/Klang Valley) to provide key insights, pioneering metrics and strategic recommendations to our client and to the packaging and consumer goods industry in Malaysia to move towards a world without waste. This research will equip stakeholders with science-based evidence, tools and frameworks to create large scale solutions.  

About The Role

Key responsibilities for this role are researching different stakeholders in the area of Waste Management and the Circular Economy in Malaysia.

This includes the below activities:

– Conducting surveys:
Across a pre-agreed number of households, waste collectors, recycling pickers, material pickers, bulk waste generators, and junk shops.
These surveys will be split evenly across different pre-agreed districts, income levels etc.
Surveys must be completed per schedule and timelines agreed.

– Ensuring that the surveys are of high quality:
Without errors in the data
All data collected must be standardised to consistent units

– Being available for contact throughout the project duration for any clarifications or updates

Further details on the above will provided upon role confirmation including finalising the number of surveys and timeline.

A fee of 20 MYR will be paid for every survey completed that meets the quality standards mentioned above. On average, the Research Surveyor is expected to conduct 60-75 surveys over a 5 week period.

Prerequisites and skill sets needed

– Good communication and interpersonal skills – to approach various stakeholders.
– Good quantitative data-gathering skills to ensure the quality of the data collected through the surveys.
– Capable and comfortable travelling in Greater KL/Klang Valley for surveys during the study period.
– At least an intermediate knowledge of English and Malay – to communicate with the GA team in Singapore. Survey questions will be in Malay, but the responses must be submitted in English.
– A basic background in sustainability and the environment. Note that past experience in waste management is not required – we’ll train the selected candidate on waste management knowledge required for the role.
– Experience in leading surveys is a bonus, but not a requirement.

About the Role:

GA Circular is working on creating a packaging recovery and collection program in Indonesia. The goal of the program will be to drive collection and recovery of post-consumer packaging to significantly increase recycling rates of common packaging materials in Indonesia.

We are looking for an experienced Program Director with excellent problem solving, analytical, strategic thinking and relationship skills to lead and manage the program as well as subsequent programs in Indonesia focused on solving the packaging waste challenge. Your background must include experience in managing and leading projects for private sector or public sector clients, engaging with senior-level stakeholders and a willingness to get your hands dirty an eye for business sense. You need to be a great communicator, at ease with working with and leading both waste collectors/recyclers, and C-level executives. Prior experience in the waste management and recycling industry is not mandatory, and training will be provided by GA for subject matter knowledge. Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and English is critical to this role.

The primary focus of the role over the course of first 12 months will be split between two key areas: value chain based and stakeholder based. Value chain based tasks will involve speaking with junk shops, recyclers, and aggregators, amongst other, negotiation with and onboarding them to partner with the program and managing relationships through the partnership. Stakeholder based tasks will include managing the key stakeholders of the program – including packaging and consumer goods companies, government stakeholders, NGOs etc. There will also be a need to manage local research survey teams and research partners.

The role provides an opportunity to meet and build relationships with a wide range of local stakeholders from industry, government and NGOs. Working with GA provides you the opportunity to work in a small, mindfully growing, Singapore-headquartered company dedicated to finding business-driven solutions to tackle waste challenges in Asia. We are dedicated, diverse team of 15 people from 7 nationalities with multi-faceted backgrounds.

Requirements:

○ 5-10+ years of experience in management or environmental consulting or in a research, strategy or data analytics role in business, government agencies or NGOs

○ Able to lead teams to successfully deliver on projects within timelines

○ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Economics, Environment, Business, Accounting, Finance or Physical Sciences (e.g. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry)

○ Advanced problem-solving, analytical, data visualisation skills and research capabilities

○ Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with various clients and stakeholders

○ Capable and comfortable traveling throughout Indonesia to conduct research and meet with stakeholders

○ Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and English – verbal and written

○ Already based in Indonesia (preferable in Jakarta, Surabaya or Bali)

○ Excellent referrals from at least 2 previous clients or past employers

○ Proficiency in Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)

Preferred:

○ Prior experience in conducting research and leading projects on circular economy, waste management, recycling, or collection ecosystems in Indonesia

○ Prior experience in managing supply chains or working in operational roles of packaging, consumer goods, waste management or recycling companies
